What made the stay stick with me was how welcoming Rita and Joao were. Joao knew the area so well, helped with everything, and both hosts had plenty of entertaining stories. I’m already thinking about coming back with friends who love wine and food. The pool was a lovely way to cool off in the quiet back yard, with the loungers spaced apart. Breakfast was also great. During the no-buffet Covid period, Rita and Joao brought us fresh bread, orange juice, eggs, cured meats, cheeses, fruit and some delicious cakes. Our rooms felt like little one-bedroom terrace houses, with a lounge downstairs and a big bedroom and bathroom upstairs. Mine also had a very large terrace. The antique furniture made the guest house feel historic and distinctive, just the sort of place I like. The rooms stayed cool even on hot days, so I didn’t need to use the air conditioning. At night they were quiet and well insulated, with good blackout shutters. The bathroom was small but lovely, and the shower was powerful. The place was carefully set up for Covid, too: washable drapes instead of curtains, cleaned after each guest, lampshades removed, and hand sanitiser by each room entrance. Even before we arrived, Joao was helpful and flexible. He put together an itinerary for our two days, focused on Alentejano wine and food at some wonderful restaurants, and showed us around Borba and Estremoz. Thanks, Rita and Joao.
