Quinta da Foz

We loved meeting Foz the Great Dane and watching the peacocks, and the owner’s tour was a real highlight. Quinta da Foz is a wonderful place to stay, with a centuries-old vila that’s been so well cared for over the years.

The house is beautiful and full of history, and the location is great. The owner pays such close attention to each guest that you can tell they really care. Breakfast was one of the best complimentary hotel breakfasts I’ve had. Our only issue was the room: it had an AC button, but we don’t think the air conditioning worked, so it got a bit hot at night. Opening the window helped, and Obidos was cooler after dark. We had a lovely stay and highly recommend it.

Breakfast was the part we loved most. We shared the family table with other guests, and the conversations ranged across all sorts of subjects and viewpoints. A few mornings we sat talking for two hours. Some people might prefer their own table, but we enjoyed meeting everyone. Quinta da Foz is also right in the middle of the village, and the beach is about a 20-minute walk away. It gets busy there, so walking can be just as quick as driving, though you can park at the beach if you want. The building’s thick traditional walls kept our room cool. We did wish the windows had awah so we could leave them open when we went out. The room had traditional Portuguese decor, with an older feel that may not suit everyone, but we liked it. The bed could have been more comfortable. This was a wonderful stay with our Portuguese hosts, and such a distinctive traditional experience in a beautiful setting, far from a generic hotel. We had an amazing time and would consider staying again if we’re in the area.

Francisco gave us a great tour of the house and its history, and I got to meet his sister and mother. The home has been in the family for over 500 years. I was there for a wedding at the Quinta and really enjoyed its traditional feel. Everyone looked after us with so much care and hospitality. Foz, the very sweet Great Dane house pet, was a delight too. It’s a beautiful place and I had an excellent experience. Thank you.
