The online photos gave a misleading impression, and this was far from the relaxing, comfortable stay I’d hoped for. This 108-year-old building badly needs renovation throughout. It might be old, but there’s nothing charming about how neglected it feels. The common areas looked uncared for, and the pool was dirty and uninviting. In the room, a strong musty smell never went away. The stained carpet smelled of mildew, and there was visible mold on the ceiling, which felt like a serious health concern. The air conditioning didn’t work, and without proper ventilation the room was always stuffy. Basic things were broken or missing: the hairdryer didn’t work, the door lock was damaged and made it hard to feel safe, and the elevator was out of order, so we had to carry bags up several flights. The bathroom was rusty, outdated, and felt unhygienic. I usually try to find something positive wherever I stay, but this experience was overwhelmingly negative. I wouldn’t recommend the hotel until significant improvements are made.

The private balconies look out over Carcavelos beach and the beautiful blue sea, and the location is great. There’s free parking, a nice breakfast buffet, a plaza full of delightful restaurants two minutes behind the hotel, and the beach is two minutes in front. The main downside was road noise and barking dogs, even on the 7th floor. With the door closed and air conditioner on, it was quiet, but the balcony is such a nice extension of the room that you’ll want to leave the door open.

I stayed five days and had a really good experience. The room was basic, with a solid wooden wardrobe, small desk, bed, chair, and little fridge. My bathroom looked recently renovated. Breakfast wasn’t available on the 8th floor because of renovation work, so it was served in a large hall by the foyer. It was nothing special, but fine. The lobby looked tidy, though old, and the building’s age is obvious. Whether that’s a problem depends on what you expect. I’d recommend it and would book again if you want a simple room to sleep well in and don’t need anything more. Before arriving, I’d been quite concerned by reviews here and comments from colleagues, but I was pleasantly surprised.

The breakfast on the 8th floor, with its lovely sea view, was a wonderful way to start the day. Our room was comfortable and very clean, and we felt right at home. Staff were extremely friendly and always happy to help with a smile. We had an amazing stay at Carcavelos Beach Hotel and would love to return.
