Herdade da Matinha Country House & Restaurant

We really wished we could have stayed longer. The countryside setting was incredibly relaxing, and breakfast was outstanding. One of the best places we stayed during our two-week hike. Highly recommended.

The walks were exactly what we’d hoped for, with the Rota Vicentina passing right through the property and continuing to the coast. We highly recommend that route, and there are also plenty of lovely beaches a short drive away. Our room was comfortable, with a great view over the grounds and hills, and we slept well. We also appreciated the calm green setting, the sustainable approach, and the relaxed feel. Breakfast and dinner were delicious, and every interaction with the staff was great. Herdade de Matinha was a real highlight of our time in Portugal, and we’d gladly return. Highly recommended!

I spent seven days here in January, working on a creative project and hoping for some quiet. The peaceful atmosphere was just what I needed. There were hardly any other guests, but the team still made sure I had everything, from clear directions to arranging a sunset outing. The weather was lovely, and I enjoyed a few hikes and the silence. My room was roomy and nicely designed, and there are lots of cozy shared spaces. The restaurant serves great food. There are dogs roaming freely around the property, which are very cute and make it feel homely. It was a stunning stay, and I can only recommend it.

The food is really tasty, with Portuguese traditional flavors and some modern ingredients. On my last visit, the Tomato Gazpacho and Oxtail Croquettes were favorites. They also have a special lunch every Sunday. The restaurant is run by two brothers, Alfredo's sons. Alfredo is the founder and resident artist. I love the kitchen, and I hear guests used to be able to access it. I wish that could come back. For me, Herdade da Matinha brings an immediate sense of being home. A few minutes there and, maybe because of the scent, I can breathe deeply and feel completely calm. If you need a good rest, this is the place.
