The owners were so friendly, helpful and discreet. I enjoyed my stay and highly recommend the place. Breakfast was handmade, with spectacular views of the falls and birds chirping. The beach is within walking distance, and it’s right by the start of all the hiking trails.

I made a booking by mistake and asked to cancel it three hours later. I had paid €210 for three nights, but they refused to cancel, gave no explanation and kept the money despite what I told them. I’m really shocked by this attitude, especially during the difficult times we’re facing. I’d hoped to meet generous people on the beautiful island of Flores, but that wasn’t my experience at Residencial Mateus. The staff weren’t helpful and seemed focused only on making money. I don’t recommend this place at all.

It was a clean, cozy place, with the kitchen and bathroom shared among the guests. That turned out to be a nice way to meet interesting people from around the world. It’s also close to a hiking path that climbs along the coast.

The room was cozy and clean. There’s no lunch or dinner, but the town has several nice restaurants, and the owners were especially friendly and helpful. Mornings here are idyllic: birds chirping, homemade marmalade at breakfast, and waterfalls in the distance. Poço de Bacalhau is just a couple of minutes away, and Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro is a pleasant 45-minute trek. You can also take the beautiful trek to Ponta Delgado.
