Despite the name, this is a hotel, not a hostel, and it’s great value for money. It’s one minute from the airport bus and close enough to the old center, while still being in a quiet spot. My room was clean, freshly painted, with sparkling white bedding, a very comfortable mattress, and a nonstop hot shower. The walls were thick, so I couldn’t hear anyone in the next room, which can happen even at the most expensive hotels. I can’t comment on the pillow, since I sleep with one. The building is a little dated and the furniture is very basic, but that seems fair for the central location and moderate price. I got more than I expected for so little. Next time in Madeira, I might even bring my husband. He usually stays only in five-star hotels, but I think he could tolerate this one. I was surprised by the negative reviews. I bet the unhappy reviewers just don’t have much travel experience.

The staff were good, and the location worked well too. The rooms didn’t look very appealing, though, and the bathroom was the worst part. I spilled some water on the floor and wiped it up, but the cleaning paper turned black. Breakfast was poor as well. I expected some Madeira products, like bananas or bolo do caco, but didn’t find them.

It’s handy being so central, and getting around is easy. The free breakfast was decent enough, and some of the staff were okay, though others weren’t. The bed and pillows were uncomfortable, so I had to ask for another pillow. One tip: if you’re giving yourselves five stars, remember to log out of the work account first. Seeing 'Central Hostel Reservations' award itself 5 out of 5 looks a bit dodgy.

The room toiletries smelled of detergent and were in reused containers, with whatever was left from previous guests. Breakfast was very basic, just machine coffee, no hot food, and no local dishes. Staff came into my room without permission, didn’t introduce themselves, and didn’t even apologize. It could have been literally anyone. This is an old, cheap-looking place with unprofessional staff, and it’s way overpriced. It falls far short of what they charge per night. I don’t recommend it and won’t return.
