The apartment has loads of room, with a big living area, balcony, two bathrooms and a spacious pool. The kitchen is well stocked with tools, and there’s a washing machine too. The TV had no cables attached, which I couldn’t make sense of. We loved waking up to the sunrise over the city, and the pool’s view was lovely, even though we only used it once because the weather wasn’t always great. Getting in was easy enough with an automatic car, and we arrived at 3 in the morning without trouble. The owners are lovely and quick to reply, and they also run a great Italian restaurant. The insects were the dealbreaker for us. We found spiders, caterpillars, ants, silverfish and cockroaches inside as well as in the garden, even with the windows and doors kept shut from day one. Caterpillars kept coming back in huge numbers, especially in the living room, kitchen, hall and balcony. Ants got into our food, and we had one cockroach inside. The sprays and traps provided didn’t help much. We liked everything else, but because of this I wouldn’t come back.

I booked a 17-day stay over the phone and was told the reservation was confirmed. I sent my ID details and address to show I was serious about booking, but no payment instructions came through. When I contacted the property on Monday to ask how to pay my share, I got bank transfer details and was told there was no Wi-Fi and would be none during the stay. A few hours later, I was told the confirmed booking had been cancelled because someone else had reserved the apartment. The owner said it was because I hadn’t paid, though he hadn’t provided payment details before then. When I pointed that out, he didn’t reply. I’m glad I hadn’t sent the €650 deposit, since I might never have got it back. Luckily I found somewhere else, but I wouldn’t recommend booking here if you want to plan a trip without worrying about your accommodation.

There’s a lovely view from the terrace above this clean cottage, and the pool is a good extra. Inside, it’s nicely equipped with a full kitchen, towels and clean bedding. The driveway is extremely steep and could easily damage a car, so take care. There’s free parking on the road about 100 metres away. No Wi-Fi, though that didn’t bother us.

The view and the very clean linens were the only good parts for us. Madeira is beautiful, at least. Getting to the house was impossible with our long, low-profile rental car because the access is all uphill, something that wasn’t mentioned. We damaged the car when we arrived. Inside, there were horrible insects, including cockroaches around 6 cm long. The bathroom smelled so bad we couldn’t stay there more than five minutes. The floor was clearly dirty and cobwebs were everywhere, so we had to buy cleaning products and insecticide ourselves, with no refund. The owner only replied after Booking.com contacted us, and offered about sixty euros as a goodwill gesture. There was no washing machine or Wi-Fi, the TV didn’t work, and the supposed barbecue area wasn’t actually a barbecue. The apartment could be superb with proper cleaning, consistent furniture like the pieces shown in the photos, and better insect control. The pool needs attention too, or at least cleaning supplies for guests who want to deal with all the flies, gnats and other bugs.
