Madeira Happy Hostel

I arrived late, and Elisabeth kindly helped me order food online. She puts out breakfast every morning and was always ready to help. My private room was even larger than it looked in the photos, and the view was a wonderful bonus. Even the people who picked me up for my hiking tour were amazed by it. It’s a great hostel whether you want to meet other guests, have a romantic escape, or spend some time away on your own. I loved it here.

We stayed for 12 days in December in a room with two beds and a private bathroom. The owners were friendly, and the view from the window and balcony was lovely. The shared kitchen is nice and large, and the dining room has the same great view. At night you can see all of Funchal lit up, which looks amazing. It’s high up in the mountains, so walking can be a bit of a workout. Having a car is useful, and we could always find a place to park on the street. The main road is close by, so getting into Funchal is easy.

I spent a week in the Deluxe Double Room with Private Balcony and was very happy with what I got for the price. Although the property is classed as a hostel, my private room felt more like a self-contained apartment, with incredible views over Funchal. I was told it had only recently become available, and I was the second guest to stay there. The room could use a few small updates, but the quality for the price suited me well. Breakfast is laid out for you each morning on the floor above the apartment: ham, cheese, bread, yoghurt, fresh fruit, and juice. Elisabeth provided five-star service. You’ll want a vehicle because of the location, though it isn’t essential. The bus route is straightforward, with a stop just around the corner, and there was parking right outside the entrance. After a long hike, if you’re too tired for anything but takeaway, the 'Bring Eat' app delivers food to the hostel. I look forward to coming back.

The host was brilliant and had lots of great suggestions for things to do in Madeira. The view is spectacular, and it’s a good fit for solo travellers. There were plenty of like-minded people staying there too. I’d highly recommend it.
