The central location is the strongest point here, and the rooms were fairly clean with decent room service. The building and fittings feel old, though, and plenty of things were damaged, broken or out of order. Reception didn’t come across as especially warm or attentive, so I didn’t get the sense that guest comfort mattered much to them. The noise came straight through the very thin walls, and the fridge smelled bad and didn’t work. Some sockets had been pulled out of the walls. The beds were the worst part: every spring could be felt, they creaked whenever I moved, and both the frame and mattress shifted around and felt completely unstable.

At about $100 a night, this wasn’t even cheap. I’ve spent the past few years living and travelling out of hotels and Airbnbs as a nomad, and this may be the worst place I’ve had in well over a year, possibly several years. The room was unbearably hot with the window shut, but there was no air conditioning or even a fan, and outside noise poured in from a ridiculously loud brass band playing among the busy restaurants and bars right by the window. There was no screen, so mosquitoes came inside. The fridge was moldy and didn’t work, and I had to buy huge bags of ice to keep my medicines cold. The bed was terribly uncomfortable. Even the location, which had looked convenient, turned out to be awful. Nothing about this “hotel” redeemed it.

The staff were very friendly, and you’re close to the city centre, cathedral, museums, shops and restaurants. The apartments are clean and perfectly functional, if not especially modern. There’s no balcony.
