We’ve stayed at the Savoy Palace Hotel more or less since it opened, and the location works especially well for me because I have trouble walking but can manage the area. Everyone on staff is polite, helpful and cheerful, from the cleaning and room teams to reception and the door staff. They really do their best for you. This time our studio was on the 10th floor. It was spacious, clean and well cared for, with a fridge, cooker, microwave, dishwasher, plenty of pans and plates, and a coffee machine, though there were no pods. The beds were very large and there was a choice of pillows. I could have used a few more drawers and hooks for bathrobes. Full stars from me. We’re already trying to book another two weeks in Ictober this year.

The staff are a big part of why we keep coming back. They’re warm, friendly and professional, and nothing seems too much trouble. We’ve visited many, many times and think of this place as our second home. The location is hard to beat, with beautiful views straight out to the sea.

Being able to get into the ocean using a ladder, plus the large outdoor pool heated to +27C, gave us a little taste of summer at Christmas. The location is excellent and very convenient for Funchal.

Fernando at the door made my son smile every time we passed, and the welcome at check-in was warm. We were even given a room upgrade. Housekeeping did a great job and added some thoughtful little touches. The hotel has excellent pools, though the changing facilities were hard to find and not very accessible. We eventually found some on our last day at the outdoor pool furthest away. There didn’t seem to be any by the indoor pool apart from a toilet. Our second-floor room had a little balcony, and as far as I could tell, all the rooms have a great view. Parking was inexpensive and the location was great. The food was just okay. Staff in the piano bar weren’t very attentive, and the pool bar staff seemed a bit surly. Everyone else was great. We were much younger than the other guests, who mostly seemed to be coach trip groups, but that didn’t bother us.
