São Francisco Accommodation

The continental breakfast didn’t have a huge selection, but what was there tasted nice. The room was spotless and quiet, though the bed was too firm and became uncomfortable. The balcony room looked out only onto the backs of buildings, and there is a lift. With so many good restaurants within walking distance and a great location, it felt like good value. A more comfortable bed would make it better.

The staff were very friendly, the room was clean and pleasant, and the location made it easy to enjoy the park, places to eat and pretty much the whole city. Sao Francisco is a wonderful place to stay in Funchal. There was free Wi-Fi, a refrigerator, TV and air conditioning, though I didn’t use the air conditioning. The price seemed reasonable, and I was pleasantly surprised to find a welcome gift in my room: a bottle of water, a small local wine and a local sweet. Breakfast was satisfactory, and I found something I liked each morning, including eggs, vegetables, mozzarella, bread, cheese, ham and juice. A few things may matter to more demanding guests. The breakfast was good but basic, and some people might find it repetitive after a few days. The Wi-Fi dropped out occasionally, but I had my own internet and spent most of my time out, so it wasn’t a problem for me. Water pressure was sometimes less than ideal. The area was fairly calm compared with some other parts of the city, but there could still be occasional street noise. I always travel with earplugs, so that didn’t bother me. I enjoyed my stay and hope you do too.

The location is perfect, and the ladies working there were kind and helpful. They arranged airport pickup, and the drivers were right on time both ways. Breakfast was good, with fresh fruit every day. I recommend the place.

The location, staff and cleanliness were the good parts, but I wouldn’t recommend staying here. I was there for a week recently and found it uncomfortable. The shower tap was broken and leaked constantly, making an annoying noise. Instead of repairing it, they put a towel underneath. The bathroom and room air stayed damp because of it. I visited Madeira when it was cold outside, and the room felt chilly because the AC heating didn’t work. Between 7-10 PM the shower pressure was really poor. The mattress was very uncomfortable and I slept badly. Noise from other guests’ rooms carried through, too. Breakfast was below average, with the same cheap options every day, like bread, boiled eggs, orange juice, butter, ham and yogurt. I know it isn’t a fancy place, but I still can’t recommend it.
