There isn't a lot to see, but the information is displayed really well. Be sure to look at the archaeological site and the cistern too, both were impressive. And it's free.

We visited at Christmas. It was cold, but beautiful, and the view is nice. Entry is free. The castle also houses a small museum with some history. Some of the features don't work very well, but it's an interesting short visit. 100% recommended.

The city view is pretty much the main thing to see, and there's no charge to visit. Just be ready for the dog near the cistern. It barked like mad and scared the hell out of me 😅, though it was cute.

The visit is free and fairly brief, around 15-20 minutes. Parking is very limited, there's no accessible route, though you can leave a bike inside the castle. The main castle dates to the 13th century, and its central section has since been rebuilt. Lamego grew from a small settlement into a city in the Roman Empire, but its first military walls came in medieval times. Set among farmland and villages near the Douro, it ranked second in importance after Porto. Most of the medieval walls had been torn down by the 20th century.

The castle courtyard has wide open views in every direction, and entry doesn't cost anything. From the city center it's about a 15-minute uphill walk. Take a look at the restored cistern area too, it adds to the visit. You can climb the tower stairs, although when I was there the exit onto the walls was closed. The Lamego Sanctuary is another option for seeing the city from above.
