Quinta Do Valdalagea

We had a wonderful two-night stay at Quinta do Valdalagea and only wish we’d booked longer. It’s peaceful, charming, very clean, and beautifully maintained. Annabella welcomed us so kindly and made us feel at home. Every morning there was a lovely breakfast spread, with accommodations for my vegetarian friend. The vineyard is stunning, so be sure to hike around the grounds. We’d highly recommend staying at this Quinta and trying the wine tasting. I’d love to come back.

Joaquim’s wine tasting was the best part of our visit. He knows his wines and is clearly passionate about them. Our Portuguese was poor and some of his English explanations were tricky for us, so we used Google Translate now and then. He stayed patient, friendly, and eager to explain everything, and the wines were top notch. We spent two nights at this beautiful winery farmhouse, built in 1837 and owned by the same family for eight generations. The rooms keep their historic feel but have updated amenities. Breakfast was plentiful and quite good, and the staff were very nice. We enjoyed walking around and taking in the breathtaking views. The short road up from the highway is extremely steep, narrow, and winding. We were told that’s normal driving in the Duoro Valley. We’d definitely stay again.

The breakfast was huge, almost more than I could eat, and the breakfast room was a pleasant spot to chat with other guests. The grounds are lovely to walk around, and once you get used to the drive up, it really isn’t bad. There’s a short drive into town, with a great area for wine and food. Room 4 was amazing, with the biggest bed I’ve ever seen, a remodeled bathroom, and window seats with a great view. My only issue was struggling with the skeleton key lock. I moved to a different room for the last night and had no trouble. Beautiful setting and views. I’d recommend it.

Joachim came to help when we needed air in one of our car tires. We had the whole place to ourselves for two nights, which made it feel like we’d rented the entire property instead of just a room. Breakfast was amazing, with friendly, personal service. Highly recommend!
