I can’t give Gaspar House zero stars, so it gets one. I never stayed there, and can’t speak to the establishment itself, but the booking process and customer service were deeply disappointing. I’d caution potential customers. I selected and paid for a room advertised with a private bathroom. After the reservation was confirmed, I was told I’d been assigned a room with a bathroom shared with other guests. I immediately asked for the room I’d paid for, but was told the only private-bathroom room was already booked. When I asked for my money back, 18.73 euros were withheld. I raised the issue with Booking.com, but the compensation they offered, a 10 euro credit for their site, wasn’t enough. I believe I should have received a full refund because of what I consider false advertising.

The place is very close to the metro, and an Uber from the airport was a short ride costing around $4. Gaspar was an incredibly sweet host, fluent in many languages, with lots of recommendations. He went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Our room was beautiful and large, and breakfast was fantastic, made with all-organic ingredients, much of it homemade. 10/10, I’ll come back and recommend it to family and friends visiting Lisbon.

The homemade Portuguese breakfast was warm, served by Gaspar himself, and made even better by his entertaining personality. The bed was so comfortable it was hard to get up, and the rooms and bathrooms were stylish, spotless, and looked brand new. They were cleaned every day. Gaspar greeted us warmly and made the flat feel homely. He was an amazing host, knew so much about Lisbon, its history, and the whole country, and could answer anything we asked. His suggestions for places to visit, eat, and shop were excellent, and his enthusiasm was infectious. The flat was elegant and stylish, on the fifth floor of a well-kept residential building, beside the metro, railway, and bus station. There was an old-style lift that worked perfectly. The whole stay was lovely, unique, and unforgettable. We’ll come back, dearest Gaspar!

Gaspar is a wonderful host who can guide you around and tell you about the city’s history. My room was large, peaceful, and comfortable. The shared bathroom was clean, and you wouldn’t even know it was shared. Breakfast was simple, fresh, and high quality. It’s an incredible guesthouse in a great location, near the airport and well connected to the city center.

Gaspar knew a lot about getting around, but I wouldn’t recommend staying here. My mom and I spent the whole visit feeling like we had to tiptoe around. We were told to be quiet after 10 pm, so we didn’t go out later, partly because the place was so poorly lit at night. The stairwell has no lights, which makes using it at night a bad idea. Getting through the two apartment doors was a nightmare with the keys. While showing us how they worked, Gaspar said, “don’t struggle like the Japanese did,” which struck me as very racist. The rooms are close together, and you can hear people arriving, talking, and shutting doors. Breakfast was nothing special, just cereal and bread. The bed was stiff and the pillows weren’t comfortable. I got ill near the end of my stay. Gaspar worried I might be contagious and didn’t want me at the breakfast table, but didn’t offer to bring anything to the room. Overall, it wasn’t a great experience.
