The breakfast was awful. There was no tablecloth or napkins, and the cutlery was tossed onto the table. The bread was stale, the toast had gone cold, and each person got half a sour orange, some butter, and a little jam. We also waited about half an hour to check in because the owner was absent, even though we arrived at the time he had specified. To make matters worse, he lost the keys to the property and suggested that we had seen them. Not recommended.

The room was dusty throughout and smelled strongly of mothballs. It was around 40 degrees, but there was no air conditioning. The manager advised us not to turn it on, saying we could get cancer, though it was actually broken and wouldn't start. At breakfast the next day, two of us got half a piece of toast and two small cubes of butter. The manager seemed unable to handle the guests' needs. One man was trying to run everything, from serving walk-in customers at the counter and tending the bar to cooking, waiting tables, and preparing meals. The only meal we had was so bad that even a beggar wouldn't accept it, and the meat was impossible to cut without an axe. We left the next day and demanded a refund. He gave it back reluctantly, and we nearly had to call the GNR. We almost contacted ASAE too, but left that for whoever tries this place next. This was one infernal night in this den. Close it before it's too late!

The rooms were clean and pleasant, and there was nothing to complain about there. The location is fantastic, very close to the Azibo dam, which is worth visiting on its own. What really made our stay was Sr. Carlos. He was unusually kind and available, always helpful and attentive to what we needed. We felt genuinely welcome and will definitely return to enjoy the dam and Sr. Carlos's hospitality again.

The location is the one good thing about this place. The room had no working air conditioning, or at least there was no remote for it. No Wi-Fi, and the TV had few channels with poor picture quality. Toiletries amounted to soap and gel, with no comb, toothbrush, or toothpaste. There is no elevator, so you have to use the stairs, which is hard to understand given the age of the building. The worst part was being charged more than the agreed price and dealing with dreadful service. After I checked in, I wasn't given a key as expected. The staff member started serving another customer who had just arrived without saying anything; I would still have been waiting if I hadn't complained. Breakfast was one of the worst I've had, and they asked me for €1 for an espresso because it wasn't included. I can't accept a place like this having just one person to handle the café, kitchen, and hotel. Avoid it if you can.

I paid €39.90 and left to finish my dinner at Casa do Careto. The meal here was simply horrible: half a slice of bread cut into little pieces for three people, completely cold tomato rice that seemed to have come from the fridge, refried potatoes, and three grilled pork steaks that cost me €25.50. The house wine was meant to be chilled but was warm, in a 0.75-litre bottle with the cork already out and used. Cheap, bad wine. A dinner to forget. This was my real experience with my family. I didn't know the place, but I passed it during my holiday and wanted to give it a try. I'm being as honest as I can. It felt like one of those horror films where everything goes wrong in the worst possible way. How can a place this poor still be operating in this century and charging such high prices? Portugal, and this welcoming, cosmopolitan region in particular, has such delicious and varied local products. If I'd seen the reviews, I wouldn't have set foot in there, unless it was to see whether they were true. It was even worse than people said. ASAE ought to close it.
