This was a nightmare, and I wouldn't trust the homeowner of the property listed as Avelino. They showed no respect for guests and did what they wanted regardless of the impact. If we'd known about the construction, we wouldn't have booked. Atlantic Holidays sent me a review request, but apparently they don't post bad reviews. I'd only seen one five-star review before booking. I wish I'd checked Google, where the rating is still decent but there is much more information. We stayed for a month after booking through Atlantic Holidays Madeira. Like many places in Madeira, the house was up a very steep hill, with a steep driveway as well. My partner fell because the way up was slippery and difficult. The climb was hard for us as older people, though the view was spectacular. The front garden was full of construction debris and equipment. Inside, the house was cute, clean and well presented, with a good layout and a good stove and oven. The cooking and serving utensils were in poor supply, the plates, cups and silverware looked like a garage sale collection, and the furniture was old. On the first day I saw a bug on the bedroom ceiling and stood on the bed to swat at it. The boards under the mattress weren't strong enough, and the bed dropped. As my weight started to come off, it sprang back and flipped me backward. I hit head first with a big crack. I honestly thought I was going to die. We had no cell service and there was no phone, so we tried to work out how to call an ambulance. In the end, I chose to care for myself and stayed up all night to keep watch. Around 6 in the morning I decided to risk sleeping. At 9, a construction crew began jackhammering concrete right above us. The building has a second story, and the owner had them opening a window to make a door. The work was expected to take several days, and the owner hadn't told the management company. I couldn't stay inside with the world's worst headache, so we went out. The good news was that I found an amazing Chiropractor who helped me a lot. The house had a washing machine, but the foldable drying rack was rusty. As with all our communication with the management company, they responded quickly and soon brought a new rack. Then ants showed up. The company came by a few times with poison or deterrent, and after a couple of visits they left the tube. I appreciated how responsive Atlantic Holidays Madeira was while we were there, but be aware that they don't post bad reviews.

The view is perfect, stretching across almost the whole town and the ocean. The apartment is small, with old furniture and a stale smell. The plates and spoons were dirty.

The bed is very short for Northern Europeans. Still, it's a good base for a week in Madeira, with a good shower and kitchen.

The neighborhood was quiet and very nice, and the walk to central Machico took 10 minutes. There are some great restaurants and cafes nearby, as well as a market selling all the essentials. The large balcony was a real plus. We could hang wetsuits and dry clothes there, though the climate meant clothes took a long time to dry. There's also a small radiator for drying things. A car park is very close, about a minute from the apartment, which was handy for leaving our rental car. The plumbing was frustrating. A pipe seemed clogged further down, and neither the kitchen nor bathroom drains worked properly. Water sat in the shower tray and sink for a long time, so we had to be careful while bathing and washing dishes. The shower door also kept slipping off its tracks. We had a major ant problem too. The owner responded quickly when we raised it and sent someone to spray while we were out, but insects were still in the bathroom and kitchen, and there was a big trail of dead ants on the wall.

Machico is a lovely town, and everything feels close by. I especially loved the balcony view in the morning. The host was quick to reply and really helpful. A great place to stay in Madeira, I’d recommend it.
