I left Manteigas with memories I’ll treasure and three wonderful new friends: José, Lurdes, and Josephina. I’d come from South Africa expecting quiet solo hikes in a small town, and the hiking in Vale do Glaciar was amazing. After 60 mm of rain, waterfalls were bursting out of the mountains everywhere. I hoped to see snow at Torre, the highest point, where there are hikes at different difficulty levels. Casa D’Avenida gave me much more than a place to stay. I was warmly greeted by the delightful senhora Josephina, and my hostess, Senhora Lurdes, made me feel welcome and comfortable throughout. She was so attentive that I felt like family, even free to help myself in the kitchen. Every day brought fresh-baked bread, four kinds of local cheese, and an almond and coconut tart that’s one of the best I’ve ever tasted. A special thank you to sra Lurdes’ husband, senhor José, who gave me a lift to the top of the pass of the Vale do Glaciar on his day off, despite the pouring rain. The trip felt like time with family. I’d expected a quiet solo visit, but came away with new friends. And Lurdes, please tell Felipe not to worry too much about Benfica’s recent loss to Braga. I’m sure they’ll bounce back soon! If you want caring hosts, delicious local treats, and a cosy fireplace in winter, this place is a must. I can’t wait to return.

I’m sorry we could only stay one night, but we’ll be back next year for longer. I’ve never had a hotel hostess care so much about making us comfortable. She even offered to pack us food from breakfast in case we needed it. The room was small, but spotless and very comfortable, just right for time in the mountains. For 55EUR, there was unlimited Nespresso coffee downstairs and freshly baked homemade banana bread, which was delicious. Then breakfast was a huge surprise: six kinds of meat, five cheeses, every kind of jam, bread, and croissant you could imagine, plus fresh orange juice and two homemade pies. I still don’t know how she managed all that in the morning. It almost felt awkward getting such treatment when we’d had service worth 100 times as much elsewhere for double the price. Best hotel we’ve stayed at in Portugal.

Freshly squeezed orange juice was outstanding, and the buffet breakfast would put some hotels I’ve stayed in to shame. The owner had a big personality and couldn’t do enough for us. A lovely bed and breakfast, very practical and well appointed, with spotless rooms. Parking is right outside, and there’s air conditioning.

The room at casa d'Avenida was comfortable and super clean, and the host was incredibly friendly. Breakfast was amazing too. Our stay was perfect, and I’d definitely recommend this lovely guesthouse!

We got one of the warmest welcomes we’ve had while travelling. The place is run by a mother and daughter team, and it was super clean with a great breakfast. They don’t speak English.
