The restaurant’s food was genuinely delicious, and the view from there was lovely. We also found the room spacious, comfortable, and nicely arranged, with a warm, elegant feel throughout the hotel. Everyone at the front desk was welcoming. We did have an issue with fireplace smoke affecting the ventilation. The smoke was even stronger in the third-floor corridor than in our room, so the exhaust system may need attention. We brought it up at checkout, and the gentleman at reception took it seriously. He explained that the desk is staffed 24 hours and offered to help us move rooms if we needed to. We appreciated that care, and still came away feeling warmly welcomed.

The piano music in the bar and restaurant felt heavy and gloomy at times, almost like funeral music. We suggested switching to something lighter, perhaps easy-listening jazz or lounge music. The staff said they felt similarly and were open to the idea. The rest of the place was lovely, with traditional Alentejo details inside and a stunning view over the valley from its spot atop the mountain in Marvao. The hotel spans two connected buildings. There’s a cosy fireplace sitting area, very friendly staff, and a rooftop jacuzzi with a five-star view. We ate at the restaurant both nights and enjoyed it each time, especially the quality ingredients and local wines.

Jose, the desk manager, was a real gem, so kind, knowledgeable, and helpful. We really enjoyed our visit to Marvao and our stay. Our balcony room, 311, looked out toward Spain and the castle, with an amazing view.

Breakfast was a highlight. The dining room is beautiful, and nearly every table has a great view. The windows are spotless, the coffee is very good, and the food is tasty. I don't eat meat or sheep or goat cheese, but I still enjoyed the meal and liked the emphasis on local products, especially the olive oil and mushrooms. The staff worked constantly, serving efficiently while staying friendly and attentive. The views from the room, bar, and restaurant are breathtaking, and the red wine at the bar was excellent. The room, though, felt old and quite cold, and could use an update. Everyone put in a lot of effort to make our stay good. Marvão itself is charming, and staying overnight there feels magical. We loved our weekend and had a very good experience.

My stay in marvão turned into a really special memory. The room, building, location, and staff all exceeded what I expected.
