The terrace had a gorgeous view, and we loved the meal. We tried the bochechas (pork cheeks) and venison, both beautifully prepared with chestnuts and exceptional. Service was friendly and attentive, the wine was great, and the prices felt very reasonable for the quality. It was a memorable, unusual dining experience, and we’ll definitely be back.

The lamb stew and pork cheeks were both cooked really well, and the house red went nicely with them. There were two of us, and we turned up at 9 o’clock tonight without a reservation. Since it’s quite season, we didn’t think we’d need one, but the waiter quickly found us a great window table. Lovely restaurant.

The beef and chestnut dish was the highlight for me, easily the best steak I’ve ever had. It was rich, cooked just right, and unforgettable. Varanda do Alentejo has a warm, traditional feel and an authentic rustic taste, with cooking that’s genuinely exceptional. A phenomenal meal in Marvão, and I can’t recommend the restaurant highly enough.

We left without eating because we didn’t want to dine somewhere we were treated so rudely. We’d waited downstairs hoping to have lunch, but nobody came, so I went up to ask whether there was a table for two. The waiter barely engaged with us and just said “no” in an incredibly rude way. I get that not everyone speaks English, but being kind doesn’t take much. We speak five languages, so he could have tried.

The food looked beautiful, but I found it a bit bland. I had the beans with boar served in bread, and my daughter tried the pumpkin and chestnut soup and the pasta with mushrooms and asparagus. I wasn’t keen on any of it.
