Vilafoia turned out to be a perfect spot for a romantic escape, just a short drive from Monchique. The team was so kind, and many thanks to Henk, Michel, and everyone there for such a wonderful stay. Our room had everything we needed, including a balcony with incredible valley views. We watched the sunset from the jacuzzi, which was amazing. The property looks out across the valley and toward the ocean near Portimão, surrounded by stunning scenery. Wow, I’m so glad I chose this hotel, it’s a real gem and I highly recommend it!

The sunset from the jacuzzi was such a lovely part of our stay, especially with the valley spread out below us. We had rented a well-equipped studio with its own balcony, separate from the main building, and the views reached across the valley to the ocean near Portimao. Vilafoia is a charming mountain hideaway a short drive from Monchique, and it was just right for a quiet, romantic break. The staff were kind and welcoming, and the website was handy for finding activities and places to eat. We liked Luar da Foia and A Charette nearby. Thanks to Henk and the team.

We loved the quiet and restorative feel of Monchique mountain, and the sunrise from our balcony in room 3 was breathtaking. The inn, accommodations, and staff were all nice, but the setting is what makes the place feel magical. Breakfast was good. For lunch or dinner, you need to go out, and there are some very good local restaurants nearby. The road is paved all the way and manageable for drivers used to mountain roads in Europe, though it calls for care. After dinner, our restaurant called a taxi when we found the drive back challenging. It arrived in five minutes and cost five euros for the four of us, so we could enjoy Portuguese wine. They also offer guided mountain walks and other activities in Monchique. With the place in such high demand because of its setting, contacting them directly to reserve is a good idea.

The yoga class was gentle and grounding, and the teacher was warm, though 20 € per person felt a bit expensive. Breakfast, served from 8 to 10 a.m., was tasty but basic; since some activities start at 9, having it available until 11 would make the morning less rushed. There are good restaurants a short drive away, and you can get a taxi if you’d rather not drive. Room service is limited, but drinks and a few snacks are available during the day. Our first light meal was nice, though a later order varied in portion size and quality. Staff were polite and friendly, with service that felt more practical than personal. The mountain setting is the real draw. Vila Foia sits among nature in the Monchique mountains, with views stretching to the ocean and lovely gardens, ponds, and pool surroundings. Sunrise and sunset were gorgeous. Rooms are clean, simple, comfortable, and rustic, each with a balcony and a wonderful view. It would be great to have coffee or tea available beyond breakfast, or a kettle or coffee machine in the room, since they otherwise cost extra. The outdoor areas are beautiful, but the pool could have been cleaner. After the storm, debris on the steps made them slippery. It’s a peaceful retreat with lots going for it, and a few improvements to comfort and consistency would make the stay feel more special and closer to other three-star places we’ve enjoyed in the region.
