Alcazar Hotel & SPA

The bathroom floor sloped the wrong way, leaving water pooled and running under the door into the room. That was just one of several problems during my stay at this supposed 4-star hotel. The room flooring was cracked, uneven, damaged, and unsafe enough that I couldn't walk barefoot. The headboard light switch was caked with grime and dust, and touching it gave me mild electric shocks. These maintenance and cleanliness issues make the place feel closer to 2.5 stars at best. It may have basic amenities, but the premium price isn't justified. I wouldn't recommend staying until serious repairs and safety updates are made.

The weather was dreadful, so I couldn't make use of the outdoor facilities. Monte Gordo was very quiet in October, a small purpose-built resort with decent but infrequent transport links. I'm glad I went, though I won't go back. The hotel itself was great: my top-floor room was clean and comfortable, with fantastic views, a fridge, safe, air conditioning, free toiletries, and a really comfy bed. Breakfast had lots of choice, the bar snacks were good, and the staff were friendly and helpful.

There were ants all over our bed and in the bathroom, and the dining experience was just as bad. The food was bland and cold, and nobody came to take drink orders, so we had to get up and approach the staff ourselves. The male waiters ran the dining hall like a bootcamp, while everyone from reception on seemed miserable and unaware they worked in hospitality. We won't be back.

The one downside was the indoor pool, which cost 17 euros per person to use. That was a shame since the outdoor pool was still chilly. Otherwise, we had a great stay from 16-22 June. Our room was spacious, clean, and superb, with very comfortable beds, and the location was ideal for a short walk to the shops, bars, and beach. The staff were amazing, and being able to check in early was very welcome. Breakfasts were excellent, and Miguel was a perfect host. There were plenty of loungers, beds, and umbrellas. I've already recommended the hotel to friends and family.
