Even during Portugal’s hottest weekend of the year, with daytime temperatures reaching 46C, the pool was the perfect place to cool off in the afternoons. We had such a calm, relaxing weekend here. The owner of the house is a very sweet lady, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a restful countryside holiday.

Casa do Lavre made a lovely change from the other tourist spots we’d visited. It’s in a charming little town, with winding streets lined by vineyards and a refreshing pool at the guesthouse. The gardens are carefully looked after, the antique furniture feels well chosen, and the views over the Alentejo landscape are lovely. The innkeeper doesn’t speak English, but she’s kind and patient, and easy to chat with in Portuguese, Spanish or French.

We’ll definitely come again. It’s an authentic hotel in the middle of a cute village, with great food, a swimming pool, and lovely staff. The lakes and zoo are close by, too. Five stars.

There isn’t much to do around this place, which is kind of the point and a nice thing. The rooms have a lot of vibrations, though. Whether that feels good or bad probably depends on how your holiday’s going.
