TRYP by Wyndham Montijo Parque Hotel

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the experience was good. It’s not the best hotel ever. The cleaning team is around for most of the day, so we could head out later and still have the room cleaned.

The place was terrible. Make sure you record the room on your first day. When I left, they claimed I’d damaged a small part of the bed and charged me 80 euro for no reason. I had no proof that I hadn’t done it, damn them.

The worst part was how the hotel handled an accusation over a mattress. We were told without any warning to pay €120 in cash for damage. We refused, asked to check what had happened and suggested using our travel insurance. The hotel then blocked us from our rooms, cut the electricity and harassed us. We called the police. They confirmed the hotel was breaking the law by keeping us from our rooms and our belongings. The staff still wouldn’t do anything without the manager’s permission. Only after the police left did the general manager quietly come out of the back office and have our keys returned. Three hours of stress and anxiety, and no reasonable conversation. The manager seemed to have a pattern of pressuring groups to pay for damage without proper evidence. Other travelers and even hotel staff said this wasn’t unusual. We spent 30 days there, renting 8 rooms, and it was one of the most disappointing hospitality experiences we’ve had. The rooms were dirty, poorly maintained and smelled of mold. Furniture and equipment were old, worn and often damaged. Ventilation barely worked, and moisture gathered on the window frames. The towels were extremely worn, but the hotel charged €6 each for even a small stain, calling it damage instead of laundering them properly. Breakfast was bland and repetitive, with no vegetables and powdered scrambled eggs. Most dinners were inedible, and nowhere near worth the extra cost. Staff were often unfriendly and visibly intimidated. Later, we saw the general manager shouting at them, pressuring and intimidating them constantly. The hotel is far past its prime, with poor service, an unprofessional attitude and no respect for guests. After years of working with different hotel networks, this was by far our worst experience. I’d strongly discourage anyone, especially groups, from booking here.

The service was rude, and the rooms weren’t clean. This hotel doesn’t deserve four stars, two at most. Breakfast was repetitive, with scrambled eggs made from powder. Dinner was a gamble, but it was terrible.
