We had booked four nights at Casa de Campo, but left as soon as we found cockroaches the next morning. The owner didn’t apologize and refunded only three nights, so we paid for one night in a room we found full of cockroaches. If the full amount had been returned with an apology, we might not have written this. We were in room number 5. It smelled strongly of damp as soon as we walked in, which immediately worried us about the room’s condition. The shared area beside us stayed noisy until as late as 11 pm. In room number 4, a hole above the ceiling had been covered with a poster, so we could hear the people next door talking. Bathroom ventilation was another problem: when a neighbor used the toilet at 2 am, the noise woke us. We told the owner about the cockroaches, but he denied it and brushed off our concern, saying the countryside has lots of insects. I’ve traveled all over the world, including in third-world countries, and stayed in places with much higher standards. Cockroaches appearing in a room felt completely unacceptable to me, even in areas where they’re common. To anyone considering it, there are better options.

Casa de Campo made a peaceful base for our group of nine, away from the city, which was about a 40-minute drive away. We could head out to explore the Azores’ nature, visit nearby beaches, or go hiking from there. The pool area was a highlight, with lovely views of the landscape and front-row seats for spectacular sunsets. It was a calm place to relax after a day out. The house itself was spacious, comfortable, and traditionally decorated, with a fully equipped kitchen that made cooking meals together easy. The staff were caring and friendly throughout our stay, and always ready to help with questions or requests. We only had to call. Their attentiveness made us feel welcome and looked after. Every part of the visit exceeded our expectations.

The rooms are fairly spacious, and the kitchen has all the equipment you need. The shared bathroom feels a bit dated, though, and for what you pay, the stay is only average. The nearest minimarket is 5 km away, so bring some food. There aren’t many alternatives for a night or two in this area, which still makes this a fairly appealing stop on the way to Nordeste.

The house is the best, and the owner is great. If you feel like going out, he seems to know people everywhere. It’s amazing! Charles is the best friend.

Room no#1 was humid and had a pretty bad smell coming from the bathroom. It was meant to be a private bathroom, but the odor made that more of a downside than a benefit. One of the pillows smelled really bad too. The Wi-Fi didn’t reach our room, and there was no phone signal inside; the walls are very thick, and reception in the area was poor anyway. I didn’t mind the internet or phone issues much since we were on holiday and wanted a retreat, but because of the damp and smell, I wouldn’t stay again. Maybe we were just unlucky with that room.
