Torre de Maneys

Staying within the walls of the city was everything I hoped it would be. Our small, delightful room had an ensuite and was part of the original storage tower of the Castle of Obidos, giving it a wonderful 16th-century feel. There seemed to be about six bedrooms in the property, with shared sitting rooms, a breakfast room, a library, and antiques. Step outside to explore the Castle, wander the cobbled streets, and pick somewhere to eat. I could hardly believe the experience.

The staff were honest, helpful, and always smiling. We were very happy with the clean rooms and can't wait to return to Torre de Maneys and Obidos. We spent four days there with family during Easter week and loved the history and medieval atmosphere. The kitchen, dining area, library with very old books, and rooftop with its beautiful view were all available to us. Communication was easy enough despite the breakfast and room-cleaning staff not speaking English. We used Google Translate and did our best, and they were kind and helpful. The staff were great overall, and we had a wonderful time. The service before arrival was excellent, too. Two weeks ahead, we got an email with the map, parking details, room information, and breakfast hours, as well as two phone numbers for questions or problems. They responded quickly to calls and emails. There are two entrances, and they let us know which one was closest to our room so we wouldn't have to carry our bags farther. Breakfast was fresh and delicious. A couple of small things to know: since we visited in spring, we don't know whether the rooms have air conditioning, but opening the windows brought in fresh air. There wasn't a bin in our rooms except in the bathroom, so we needed a plastic bag or had to use one of the two kitchen bins. In one bedroom, the bathroom window facing the bedroom was missing half of its glass, which meant there was no privacy when using the bathroom. Thanks for making our vacation so memorable. We look forward to staying at Torre de Maneys again.

We had a really bad stay and found the staff very rude. Please read the reviews on this hotel carefully, both here and on Booking.com. We didn't like the self-check-in. For a hotel charging €130 a night, it would've been better to have someone there to welcome guests. The directions weren't clear enough, so we arrived at an empty, pitch-dark, old-smelling medieval building that was meant to feel charming but felt abandoned instead. After finding our room, I called a woman named Maria for help turning on the air conditioning because we were getting hot. Getting from the parking lot to the hotel hadn't been easy, either. She spoke to me as if I were an idiot and told me to fiddle with a knob inside the toilet to turn on the heating unit. Eventually she realized she hadn't understood what I was saying. She didn't apologize, and the air conditioning still didn't work because it's a central system. The first room was a big disappointment for the price, and we wanted to leave. Thankfully, she moved us to a better room, but didn't call afterward to check whether everything was okay. The half-used Pantene shampoo and random plastic bottle of soap in the bathroom felt cheap and gross. Breakfast was only served for an hour and a half, so you have to be quick. When we returned around 11:30, a staff member raised her eyebrows and said, “you’re supposed to checkout at 11.” There had been no staff to greet us at arrival, no checkout information anywhere, and nothing about checkout in the email. Families with kids or elderly people should think carefully before staying. It's hard to access, and you have to find your way in and locate your room by yourself. We got zero service during the stay.

The history of the property comes through in the arched walkways and the beautiful design, with warm wood and plenty of lounge and shared spaces to explore. The room was simply decorated but had what we needed, and felt modern without taking away from the historic character. Our cozy room had a charming little terrace, and the bathroom was spacious, clean, and well equipped. The location, atmosphere, and breakfast were all just right. My one complaint: the pillows were terribly uncomfortable.
