Original Douro Hotel

We found free parking close by, which made this an economical option. The hotel is centrally located, though there isn’t a huge amount to do in town itself. It worked well for train trips, boat rides, and tours that meet right in Peso de Régua. The historic renovation is beautiful and felt personal. Breakfast was AMAZING, fresh and delicious. We got up early each day to be among the first down.

We were a family of four, and the room was beautiful, clean, and comfortable. The staff were welcoming, generous, and incredibly kind and helpful. Their hospitality went well beyond what we expected. The location is fantastic, breakfast was delicious, and the lobby shop has sweet, thoughtful things. We’d absolutely stay here again.

We used this lovely old hotel as a base for exploring Douro, and it worked perfectly. It’s been modernised with great taste and is only a few minutes on foot from the train station. The staff were warm and helpful.

Restaurants and a few quintas (wineries) are easy to reach on foot, and the train station is close, with what seemed like plenty of taxis for getting farther afield. The breakfast spread was great. Our room faced the tracks. The trains weren’t too noisy, though they could bother you if you want to sleep in once morning service starts. The hotel is beautifully restored and sits in a handy town for exploring Douro wine country. Like other reviewers, I think it’s better than its two-star rating suggests.
