The central location and the privacy might suit some people, and the housekeepers work at keeping the hostel clean each day. But the strong mold and sewer smells make that an impossible task. The sewer odor even woke me in the middle of the night, and I had to open the window just to breathe. I first noticed the mold smell when I entered the room, but everything looked clean, so I opened a window and didn’t think much of it while we were there to explore the Azores and just needed somewhere to sleep. Over time, though, I also ran into broken amenities. The Wi-Fi was unstable, the shower took a long time to heat, and the stairs were steep. Please hire someone to repair the plumbing and other amenities. This is nowhere near a 4-star stay.

The location is the one thing this place has going for it. The Wi-Fi was terrible and kept dropping, the bed sheet didn’t fit the bed, and the rusty stained sheets were torn. The towels were musty. My room’s best feature was the roof window, but you could barely use it because of bugs, which is fair enough. There were no amenities, and the stairs were incredibly steep and hard to manage. The kitchen needs major repairs, and although there’s a fridge, it wasn’t clear whose food belonged to whom. For a “4 star hotel” I expected a lot more, including reception and amenities. I thought about checking out and paying to stay somewhere else.

The room and bathroom had a newly renovated, modern feel, though the TV reception was poor. We didn’t use the shared kitchen, lounge, or small garden. At first we couldn’t work out how to open the door with the key, but that was our mistake. You have to pull the keyed lock toward the street before turning it. The manager came promptly to help when we called.

Easy self-check-in, a decent price, and a great location were the positives. There was no reception, though they did provide contact details. Our room was musty and so humid that all our clothes were damp afterward. We had to climb lots of steep stairs to reach the top floor. The sheets were stained and dirty, and there was even some sort of worm under the pillow. The bathroom was dirty and moldy, with a broken door handle and cabinets. This definitely isn’t a 4-star hotel, more like 2 stars at most. I can’t recommend staying here.

There are lots of sights and places to eat within a short walk. Parking is another matter: there’s no parking at the property, street spaces are hard to find, and there is a garage one block away. This is more like a bed and breakfast than a hotel. The street entrance stays locked, so you need a key or code to get in. Be sure to get the code, and your key will be in your room. Breakfast comes in a basket left at your door each day, and they clean the rooms if you request it. There’s a shared kitchen where guests can use the refrigerator and heat food.
