Central Hostel

The service was friendly and helpful, but thankfully we only stayed one night. Some of the room details were in poor shape: the floor was partly damaged, the towels had stains, and there was dust, hair and a few insects. The old windows let in a lot of noise from the neighboring street. The bathroom is shared, which the description didn't clearly mention. If you're looking for a hotel, I can't recommend it. As a hostel, I guess it's okay.

We booked five nights but left on the second after jewelry went missing. Other guests told us a watch was missing, so we checked our things and found that some of our jewelry was gone too. We were told the cleaning lady had supposedly taken it, even though this hostel doesn't include room cleaning during a stay. We felt unsafe sleeping there and asked for our money back the next day so we could leave. The owner didn't seem surprised when we called about the theft. We arranged a time to discuss it, but he didn't show up. Two days later, he returned the jewelry except for the gold pieces. After that, the other guests left their suitcases in their car each day while sightseeing around the island.

The lounge, kitchen and dining area were all clean and felt like the same high standard. The location is good, and it seems like a great place for either a short or longer stay in the Azores. Check-in felt a bit grumpy, though that may have been cultural, my own personality, or the fact that I hadn't slept properly for 48 hours.

The location is very good, and the bedroom was okay, but it badly needs a deep clean. The bathroom hadn't been cleaned at all by the time of my stay, and the cleaner had last been there four days earlier. There was a very, very bad smell. Hygiene needs to improve urgently.
