The setting is a real plus, with hikes, a stone beach, and some good local restaurants nearby. Our room also had a sunny beach view, and the hotel lists plenty of facilities. Still, the stay fell short in several important ways, and we left early to book somewhere else. Sleep was the biggest problem. The beds were brutally hard, the hardest I can remember, and I could feel the springs through the mattress topper. The pillows didn't help. Noise travelled easily from the hallway and neighboring rooms, especially in the mornings and evenings, so earplugs are a good idea. The layout of the wellness area is odd: the pool sits in the lobby, in full view of people arriving and passersby, and the sauna is a small box there too. The workout room is also in the lobby, divided off only by low partitions. Parking is very tight, and once the lot is full there's no room to turn around, so you may have to reverse back out. It'd be wise to check for a space before driving down. Breakfast was acceptable but not especially good, with a long wait for coffee, and the Wi-Fi was very slow. Most of the staff we met seemed uninterested in their work and reluctant to help, except for the cleaning staff. That stood out after the friendly service we found at other places and restaurants in Madeira. For a pricey four-star hotel, the overall impression was that too little care went into many parts of the operation. The location is nice, but the rooms, beds, facilities, and parking made it hard to give a good rating.

The room was spacious, had an ocean view, and the employees were nice. Breakfast was OK, and there was occasional entertainment in the lobby. But the Wi-Fi was unusable, and the wellness setup felt badly thought out. You swim in the entrance hall where arriving guests and people outside can see you; the sauna is visible from reception and even from outdoors. I can't understand who thought that design was a good idea. I also had concerns about my room. A connecting door to the next room was secured with just a simple latch, which left me uneasy about its security and about leaving my laptop there. Sound carried so clearly that I could hear ordinary conversation and even someone stirring tea with a spoon.

We really enjoyed the property and the visit overall. The town is quaint, the location is perfect, and there's plenty to see within easy walking distance. Our room was great and we liked the breakfast. The problem was the sewer gas. It spread through every part of the hotel and was awful to breathe in nonstop. I understand this may happen at island properties from time to time, but it didn't improve for us, and seemed to get worse as the stay went on. I'm no civil engineer or plumbing expert, but the smell was gross, really vile. This needs to be addressed for the health and safety of guests and staff.

We especially appreciated the garage, since finding parking on an island can be difficult. The hotel sits right by the water, with lovely sunset views across the bay, and an upper-floor room with a balcony would be my pick. Both breakfast and dinner were very good, with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables.

We spent eight nights here, and the location was beautiful and peaceful, just right for a quiet break. The staff were all fantastic, especially the restaurant team. Our half-board meals were delicious, with plenty to choose from, and we always left dinner full. We also enjoyed the pool, sauna, and steam room. The rooms, though, were shabby, with peeling wallpaper and worn furniture. Worst of all were the beds: extremely hard, with noisy springs, and possibly the most uncomfortable mattresses I've had in Portugal. The pillows made sleep even worse. For such an expensive hotel that calls itself four-star, that standard of bedding really isn't acceptable. It left the whole stay feeling let down, and management should focus on improving it if they want to maintain their reputation.
