Escarpa - the Madeira Hideaway

I stayed for a week with my cousin and we had a phenomenal time. The staff made us feel at home, and every room has an impressive panorama of the ocean. Breakfast was excellent, with fresh, high-quality products. The 90 degrees restaurant downstairs also serves delicious, quality food. Beautiful views, great facilities, lovely people, and really good meals. A hidden gem! 💎

The views at Escarpa are beautiful, but the way the owner handled a basic safety concern overshadowed everything else. I was travelling alone and wanted to be able to lock my room before going out or to bed. After the door had been left open to cool the room, it wouldn't close properly; it scraped against the frame and took real effort to move. I asked whether there was a trick to it or if someone could quickly check it. The owner said it “wasn’t like that before I arrived” and told me to “just sleep with the door open.” She said this to a staff member beside me, then added, “can you tell her,” as though I wasn't standing there. When I explained that I was concerned, she stormed off, called another guest, handed me the phone, and told me to explain the problem to them instead. Those guests were kind enough to come over and help troubleshoot. For me, this wasn't really about the door itself. It was the dismissive, unprofessional response and attitude. This review doesn't even do ir justice. I'd assumed the negative reviews I'd read before booking were exceptions, but unfortunately that wasn't the case.

The infinity pool and attached jacuzzi were the highlight, with beautiful island views, and a book and cocktail make it an easy place to spend the day. Bring your own drink, though, as there's no bar or poolside service. The hotel has a warm, personal feel, thanks to the owner and staff, who are happy to help, chat, and make the stay special. Breakfast is simple, fresh, and homemade, just how we like it. The “90 Degrees” restaurant is right across from the entrance. We didn't get to try it, but it was always full, and the delicious smells in the evening made it tempting. We'd highly recommend the hotel for a relaxing, personal stay. Just keep in mind it's not especially accessible for people with mobility issues.

We had a really enjoyable five-night stay. The staff were friendly, the breakfast was great, and the facilities felt modern and clean. Every room has a great view. We'd definitely stay here again if we come back to Madeira.
