Hostel Amoreira

The Algarve beaches were lovely, and the hostel is well placed near both the shore and supermarkets. The stay itself was a different story. The photos don't show the actual state of the place, which felt neglected. Our double room was supposed to look onto a garden, but instead faced a rough dirt track where cars parked. Spiders, mosquitoes and ants were in the room, even in the bed, and the bathroom had spiders too. Doors, windows and outlets were damaged and dated, and the air conditioner looked like it belonged in the 1970s. The shared kitchen was dirty and full of insects, so I couldn't cook. Three mini-fridges were packed with food left in poor condition, and nobody seemed responsible for clearing it away. The only staff member I saw around the property was a woman handling laundry and replacing toilet paper in the bathrooms. I think the place needs a health inspection. They took the full payment when we booked, although they say they only charge a smaller reservation amount. Now I see why, once you arrive, you can't just leave. I felt cheated and wasted my money after trusting the good Booking reviews. This place might suit someone with a very high tolerance for insects, dirt, mess and night noise. I wouldn't be surprised to find rats on the way to a room.

This place has gone downhill fast since last year, while the price has nearly doubled. At 55 euros for one night, it is far too much for a room with two beds, no table or chair, and just one outlet for charging devices. I could get a hotel for 45 euros with breakfast for two included. I don't mind a shared bathroom too much, but having three showers in one room means people may be showering at once. That could feel uncomfortable for a woman if men are using the showers at the same time. I will never stay there again. I'd rather sleep on a park bench. I really don't understand how they keep the business going. It's an absolutely nasty dump.

The beach is a 7-10 minute walk away, and there's a pool on the property. I liked the place, even though it's not new and could use some renovation. Wifi only works in the common room of the main building.

The male staff member was nice and the location was good, but I can't say much else in its favor. There was no air conditioning or breakfast. It was the worst hostel room I've ever had. I stayed one night, then moved out the next morning. Never again.
