The room was the biggest letdown. Room 204 had a strong damp, musty smell at night, and when we told reception, they suggested turning on the air conditioning. It made no difference. A ceiling light also kept switching on by itself overnight. We didn’t bother going back to reception, as we figured we’d just be told to use the AC again. The hotel was partly being renovated when we arrived, which is understandable, but the welcome felt cold, almost as though we were inconveniencing the staff. When we asked about seeing the facilities, we were told there was no need because they were just rooms. For a hotel at this level, that response and the lack of warmth were surprising. We’d expected this to be one of the highlights of our time in Porto, so it was a real disappointment. The city itself made up for some of it. Maybe we were unlucky, but the staff could have been more welcoming, empathetic, and friendly. Such a shame, since the hotel is otherwise beautiful and well located.

The staff were lovely, helpful, and accommodating. We had to leave before breakfast, so they packed us a lunch bag for the airport. Breakfast had a tasty, well-cooked selection of hot and cold food, and the bar was welcoming too, with good-value, well-prepared meals. We were lucky to stay in the main castle, in a room with its own courtyard and 180 degree city views. It made the visit especially memorable. The room was spacious, clean, and nicely laid out, and the hotel is every bit as beautiful as the photos. If we come back to Porto, I wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else.

The breakfast room is marvelous, worth going to at least once. The place combines Portuguese character with modern comforts, and it’s convenient for getting around, about 20 min on foot from the center or a few mins to the metro. There was just one downside: a smell in the room. It was bearable, but still unpleasant.

We especially enjoyed the Fado night, and breakfast was very nice in an amazing dining room. The castle is beautiful inside and out. The owner and his son clearly care about their guests, and the service was great.

We were in Family room 106, with two bedrooms, though one of them had no window. The bathroom was nice, with both a shower and bathtub. The hotel is a pretty little castle, close to the metro, and cleaning was done daily. Breakfast was good, but mostly the same each day apart from the cakes.
