Dear Porto Guest House

My rating is closer to 3.5, but Google doesn't offer half stars. I stayed for two nights, and the staff were very hospitable. The room was clean and a good size for one person, though the mattress was firmer than I liked. It's right on Santa Catarina St., with plenty of shops, a mall, a few restaurants just steps away, and a metro station nearby. It's 15 minutes from the city center. A couple of things could be better. The walls are thin, and one night some rowdy guests woke me around 2/3 am and kept me awake for more than a minute or two. Breakfast was disappointing too. It isn't self serve, so you have to wait if someone's already seated, and there isn't much variety. It was mostly bread, deli meat, cheese, and tea/coffee. Some fruit or yogurt would have balanced it out. Also, there's no elevator, so you'll have to carry heavy luggage up the stairs.

We found the owners very welcoming, and the bathroom worked without any problems. Our four-person room felt a little tight, with hardly anywhere to put clothes or bags, but for the price it was worth it. They also let us leave our luggage in a room on the day we checked out. A good option for a short stay.

The owner and manager were terribly unwelcoming, and the general attitude from both the owner and other guests was rude. We were ignored and spoken to badly. He also pretended he couldn't speak English. There was no hot water for making tea or coffee, and breakfast was nonexistent. The photo of the back area is outdated: it shows the owner's garden, which guests can't use. Also, don't stay here if stairs are a problem. After I threw my passport, I was accused of attacking the owner and then of nearly attacking him. Please show the footage. I yelled and gave him the bird. Yelling is not attacking.

José was a great host. The room was comfortable and cleaned every day, with fresh towels every couple of days. It's only a few minutes' walk to the centre, and a little farther down to the river. We had a lovely stay and would recommend it.
