There’s plenty to enjoy here: historic architecture, a lively crowd, loads of gifts and art, and regional food and snacks to try. The market is clean, has restrooms, and connects directly to an underground metro station. It’s a fun place to eat, browse, and take in the atmosphere, so I’d recommend it. The lack of seating is awkward. Unless you’re in one of the table service restaurants, you’ll be standing or sitting on the steps if you want to eat. Also, it closes earlier on Saturdays, which surprised us when we planned to come on our last evening in town.
We loved the renovated Mercado do Bolhão. Go around 9:00 AM if you want to get there before the crowds. The fish stalls sell €3 glasses of wine to enjoy as you look around. We tried wild boar empanadas, fresh oysters, and local cheeses. For a more relaxed lunch, go upstairs. The traditional vendors are lovely to chat with and enjoy sharing Porto's spirit!
The renovation left the market impressively clean and organized. Fresh flowers, spices, chocolates, produce, and wine stands fill the ground floor. Upstairs there are a few restaurants along with stalls selling jewelry, clothes, and local art. Wine is reasonably priced, but the tasty little bites feel aimed at tourists. Locals say this isn’t where they do their everyday shopping, though it’s still a beautiful landmark for a stroll and a drink or two.
Even with all the people around, the market stays surprisingly clean. The recent renovation has done a lot for its beautiful historic building. There’s a lively, authentic feel, with plenty of fresh local produce and traditional Portuguese food. A good place to visit if you’re interested in Porto’s food culture.
There’s a great range of fresh produce, seafood, and local treats at Mercado do Bolhão. You can stop for a small bite or a glass of wine and enjoy the lively local atmosphere. It’s also a lovely place to browse for souvenirs. The renovation has left it clean, organized, and beautiful. A must visit in Porto for a taste of the city.
