We wanted somewhere clean and safe to rest on the Camino, but instead spent the night wondering if insects would crawl around while we slept. For us, this was an absolute no-go. “Sardine and Friends” sounds welcoming, but the only friends we found were cockroaches. Several scattered across the bathroom floor as soon as I turned on the light, and one even came under the door into the bedroom. This seemed like a clear infestation, not just something “normal in the South.” You could even leave with a few in your backpack.

The location is perfect, and the tiny bathroom was at least functional. The room itself was small and very dark. The wooden floor was so noisy that when the next door neighbor got up, I thought there was an earthquake. You can hear absolutely everything from the room next door.

It could have made a good hostel, but it needs renovating. There might still be a bedbug problem too.

On the Camino Portuguese, I had a private room next to the hostel. The shared kitchen was useful, and there’s a large grocery store nearby with plenty of stock.

The rooms are pretty spartan, and the nice looking community room stays locked. Check-in is strictly at 3 pm, so don’t arrive early. With the window shut, everything was great. Once it got too warm and I opened it, though, I could hear everything from the street, including people shouting all night.
