Being the only guests for a week in this former tea factory made our stay at Pico do Refúgio feel especially peaceful and private. The surroundings, including Santa Bárbara Beach and Lagoa do Fogo, were stunning. We loved the atmosphere, the fireplace, and the cozy interior, and it was a pleasure coming back after busy days to somewhere that felt like home. Ana was a fantastic host and the service was exceptional. Breakfast was varied and delicious, and after a couple of delayed flights we were welcomed with appetizers when we arrived. An amazing trip.

We spent the last few hours of sun by the beautiful pool with a glass of wine, after exploring during the day. The whole place had a tranquil feel, with thoughtful decor, carefully laid out grounds, and breakfasts delivered individually. Ana gave us the warmest welcome and was an absolute superstar with guests. Our room had a fully equipped kitchen, including an Alessi kettle and toaster, but we chose to cook on the BBQ in the cabana area and eat outside. We also liked taking breakfast to the picnic tables on the lawns, a lovely way to start the day. A friend had recommended the place and I’m so glad we came, I couldn’t fault it. I’d move in permanently if I could, and hope to return in winter for the fireplace and cozy atmosphere.

Ana was a wonderful host at check-in and throughout our stay. Her recommendations were spot on, and she answered every question quickly. The apartment was just what we wanted, and our one-year-old had a great time on the grounds. It’s centrally placed for exploring Sao Miguel Island, and breakfast was a lovely start to each day. We visited in low season, so it was quiet and a great deal. We’d go back in a heartbeat and can’t recommend it enough.

We spent six nights in the caldeira appartment. The view was amazing, there was ample parking, and the atmosphere was really nice. Just watch out for the bump at the entrance. The kitchen had enough equipment for breakfast and a few dinners. The pool isn’t heated, but it was pleasant, with loungers, though there were no small tables. I’d suggest switching on the dehumidifier each day before heading out after breakfast. Restaurants are a 10-15 minute drive away, and reservations are a good idea. The former tea factory and its surrounding 20-acre grounds have belonged to the same family for centuries. We only saw the nice receptionists at check-in and check-out. The bed, at 1.40m, wasn’t wobbly but was too small for us, and neither of us slept very well. The holes in the nightstands weren’t ideal. Maintenance was working on an ants problem in the bathroom. A Nespresso machine in the apartment would be a nice addition.

The team supported us throughout our stay, and the breakfasts were wonderful. We were able to truly rest in the green surroundings, with the island’s special energy all around us. The building feels authentic, the architecture is beautiful, and the interiors are stylish. A spectacular place that I’d highly recommend.
