São Lourenço do Barrocal

This is a fascinating hotel complex in Monsaraz, and a special place to wander around. We rode horses on the estate and took a fun hot air balloon trip over the nearby vineyards and olive groves. The place is splendid, with a more earthy than fancy feel.

The team were super friendly and helpful, and you keep seeing familiar faces because many have worked here for years. Our massage therapist had been there nine years, and the host six or seven. That loyalty comes through in the atmosphere and service. I’d definitely recommend a visit. The property is amazing, with lovely gardens, vegetable and fruit patches, two pools, and large rooms with good baths. The restaurant food was good quality too. The shower pressure was great. My main letdown was that the rooms felt a little empty without personal touches like art or decoration. The pools aren’t heated, which is unfortunate in Portugal’s weather, as they’re too cold for swimming much of the year. I’d suggest heating them to 28-29 degrees.

We went in February with our seven-year-old daughter, and it was a wonderful, memorable holiday. The Meadow cottage, grounds, food and activities were all amazing, but the people made it feel one of a kind. The staff paid such close attention to guests that we felt really welcome and special. The land itself is gorgeous. I’ve recommended the hotel already and will keep doing so. We hope to come back soon.

The rooms are serene and comfortable, decorated with an understated local style. Details throughout show respect for the area’s culture and history. The staff are professional, kind and attentive, and make guests feel at home. A real gem in Alentejo.
