Breakfast was good, especially the yogurt, fruit, whole wheat bread, and decent coffee. The rooms are large and comfortable, and all have a view, at least from the side. You’re right across the street from Salema beach, which is a great location.

Our room was clean, and we liked having a balcony where we could enjoy a drink at the end of the day. Breakfast was well stocked every morning. We had a great three-night stay at Hotel Residencial Salema, a perfect base for exploring the western Algarve.

It’s a very basic hotel, but worked fine for a long weekend. The location is great. Walk down to the beach, turn right, and look for the dinosaur footprints in the rocks by the stairs!

Valentine, who runs the hotel lobby bar, is the reason I’m giving this place five stars. I arrived in Salema knowing neither the town nor the country, and barely knowing the language. Valentine made me feel like I belonged. He has a real gift for making those easy, authentic connections that give you a little glimpse of Portuguese life. As long as he’s there, I’ll come back to this hotel and visit his bar. ❤️ The hotel itself has wonderful balconies and a beachfront location, and the breakfast is top notch without going overboard. The staff are all friendly and helpful. The facilities are dated, but seem to be maintained as well as a small family-run hotel can manage. Our room, at least, had very few amenities and bathroom facilities that were close to unacceptable.
