The staff were wonderful and attentive, and the grounds and grand entrance make a striking first impression. But my garden room was downstairs in a somewhat musty area, and felt like a mediocre Marriott: large by European standards, but otherwise ordinary. It looked as if it had been restored on a budget sometime in the 80s or 90s. The cheaper rooms in the unattractive new spa wing may be similar, so I’d avoid those and the garden room. The suites might justify their higher price, though I doubt it. The hotel needs serious refurbishment. Everything looks tired and could use fresh paint and a general refresh, especially the awful carpeting throughout. The gated entrance, long drive, valet, furnishings and palatial lobby all suggest a special treat, but the stay didn’t live up to that impression. We’d stayed the night before at Torel Royal Court in Guimares for two-thirds the price, and found it easily twice as nice. For the price being asked, this isn’t worth it to me. It could become a magnificent hotel that earns its five-star rating, but the owners would need to spend about $20M renovating and restoring it so the rooms feel like a palace and offer something special. As it is, I’d put it at maybe 3.5 stars at best.
I liked the garden, and it’s a lovely historic place. A good spot if you’re staying in the city with a car. The spa is nice too. The spa building and rooms look like they’re from the 80s, but they’re clean and pleasant.
The hotel and grounds are fantastic, and the service was spectacular. Breakfast was very, very good. I’d recommend skipping dinner at the restaurant on site.
We enjoyed the spa facilities and outdoor pool, which seemed well maintained, and the bellman who showed us to our room was delightful. The lobby gives a luxurious impression, with an elegant check-in area and lovely spa-style water. But our garden room was mediocre at best, extremely musty, and tired, like much of the hotel. Cobwebs on a few of the beautiful hallway sconces were disappointing. I can imagine it was once worthy of five stars; with a much-needed refresh and a full gut renovation in some areas, it could regain that grandeur. We stayed for one night.
The Michelin-rated restaurant is a nice touch, and Coimbra’s delightful library, the original family chapel and all the beautiful old-wing rooms make that side of the hotel special. The modern wing is more comfortable. Still, nothing else compares with having the site of Romeo and Juliet and the love fountains of Ines and Pedro.
