As part of our Tour of East Madeira, we stopped by the old houses and church in Santana today. They really are old, and there were plenty of other visitors arriving on minibus tours. It looked like a nice spot to spend an afternoon, but we had to head on to our next stop.

The owner was so welcoming. He called us over from across the street, invited us in, then showed us around and explained the history in broken English. It’s a charming, interesting original home, about 240 years old.

I wouldn’t make a special trip for it, but it’s worth stopping by if you’re nearby. About 30 minutes is enough to see the village. We didn’t visit the museum, so I can’t comment on it.

Hearing the story from someone born and raised in this old house made the visit amazing. We enjoyed the coffee liquor too, and the owner was so friendly and welcoming. 💛

The owner tells you about his family’s history and what it was like growing up there. The visit includes a homemade coffee liquor, which was delicious. Don’t miss this place, the house feels like the only legitimate authentic one in town. 🥰
