HORTA GRANDE Hostel worked out especially well for my bike. I had plenty of room to repair it in the orange grove, and could keep it safely inside the house at night. The hostel’s roomy terrace was a lovely spot for dinner, with a splendid view over the quaint old town beneath its imposing castle. I arrived at FARO at 15:00, took a taxi to the railway station, and reached SILVES around 17:30. The five-minute ride by bicycle left me time to explore before dark. Helena, the charming owner, let me pick as many oranges, tomatoes, and plums as I liked, and said there’d be figs and avocados in autumn. I enjoyed the stay so much that I came back three weeks later for several days.

At Horta Grande, Hellena feels like the super Auntie I never had, and the atmosphere is the kind of homely one I’d love to have myself someday. The grounds and terrace are great for relaxing and chatting with other guests, with a seemingly endless supply of juicy oranges and other fresh garden fruit. I’ve stayed in plenty of hostels around Portugal, but none has made me this happy. It’s clean, quiet, and super comfortable. I can’t recommend the place enough, and would give it six stars if I could!

We only spent two nights in Silves, but picked the perfect place. The big garden had lots of fruit we could eat, and we made fresh orange juice in the morning. I’ve never had better, it was so juicy! Antonio kindly suggested a few places to see, and his mother was lovely and helpful too. Just perfect :)

A brilliant little hostel for a few days in the Algarve, whether you’re hiking or just looking for somewhere to stay. The rooms are large, with curtains and lockers for each bed, and there are great views of Silves castle and old town. The woman who runs the place and her son are so helpful and have loads of recommendations. You get fresh fruit from the garden every day.

A nice spot for relaxing in the countryside and enjoying nature away from the city's hustle and bustle. The owner, Elena, is caring and very accommodating. She really is like a mother!
