Casa Do Terrenho

Casa do Terrenho sits in Terrenho, about 6 km from the county seat of Trancoso. The village is surrounded by historic, cultural and architectural heritage, with Trancoso, Foz Côa, Aguiar da Beira and Penedono nearby, as well as Terras do Demo, so beautifully described, land and people, by Aquilino Ribeiro. Not far away, the majestic Serra rises above the Douro River in all its glory. The house has the look of a traditional Beira manor, with granite as its main feature. It was extended several times over the years, most recently in 1871. Now a rural tourism property, it has three double rooms, one suite and two apartments, all with private bathrooms. There’s also a lounge, games room, dining room and sauna. One room, in an annex, is equipped to welcome guests with reduced mobility. Outside, there’s a pool and lovely garden alongside a stream that tumbles down in a cascade. The staff are very friendly, professional and helpful, and breakfast was very good.

The garden is lovely, with a small, pretty pool, and the Teja dam below is a beautiful sight. This rural tourism house is well placed among several medieval castles, with the fortified city of Trancoso only 10 km away. For a meal, I’d recommend Museu, which is good and reasonably priced.

The suite was worth every cent. It had a well laid out, very spacious living room, bedroom and bathroom, all in excellent condition and with a traditional regional style. The place itself is quiet and welcoming. Next door there’s a lovely leisure area with a great pool set in a garden, plus a little nook that’s perfect for a romantic moment.

The location is excellent, the facilities are very good and the pool is great. Senhora São deserves special mention for her dedication, kindness and care in making sure everything goes well. The property would benefit from air conditioning and a TV in every room, as the rooms get extremely hot. There’s also a problem with thousands of flies. Electronic devices or some other solution could help with that and make stays much better.
