The view from the 10th floor was every bit as good as I hoped. We booked a room facing the beach, and waking up to the Atlantic Ocean at Troia, with Arrabida National Park and the beaches in view, was spectacular. It reminded me a little of the Whitsundays, only in Portugal. The staff, from reception to breakfast and housekeeping, were friendly and helpful, and the studio was serviced each day. The room itself is spacious, and the Wi-Fi was stable. The reception lounge is also a nice spot to sit and get some work done. Breakfast was good, though nothing especially memorable. The apartment is around four-star quality. Without that view, I might rate the accommodation three stars. The furnishings and TV feel dated, as does the waiting area on each tower floor. The mattress had worn dents and could use replacing. I also missed basics like tea, coffee, and water replenished daily, and warmer bedside lighting would have been nicer. At Tower Rio there are only two lifts, and one was broken at level 11, which meant a long wait. They need upgrading. There’s no screen on each floor to show whether a lift is going up or down. For more complicated requests, using Google Translate may help, and the Portuguese staff seemed to appreciate it too.

We had a horrible experience here. I was told the hotel changed its name because of a bad reputation. I wouldn’t consider staying, even for one night. Go to Comporta instead.

The AC filters in the rooms weren’t being cleaned. I watched a maintenance worker take one out, and we insisted on a room change. I also felt the property relied on interns, including young people, to keep wages low, and I didn’t see any senior staff. Nobody seemed accountable for anything. The pool bar was a joke, even serving bread bought at a supermarket. There was no quality in what they did. Stay away if you can.

The shared bathrooms in the lobby were filthy and old. The hand soap dispenser had mold, and there was no soap, which is a health concern in a family hotel with so many children needing to wash their hands. Our apartment also had a leak from the day we arrived. I reported it to the manager, but nobody fixed it or offered a solution. The place is poorly maintained, and management doesn’t seem to care.

I had to move rooms because of some random noise at night, and the mattress urgently needs replacing. The room internet didn’t work, the gym was out of order, and the pool needs maintenance. Housekeeping left the room dirty. It felt like the hotel needed urgent repairs.
