We ended up leaving three days early, which says a lot about how the stay went. The room was warmer than outside even in April because the air conditioning barely worked. The shower was in a bathtub with only a curtain, and the facilities felt dated for the price. The kettle in our room leaked. We reported it, but it wasn’t repaired or replaced while we were there. Getting to Porto’s main attractions from Vila Nova de Gaia meant at least a 20-25 minute drive, often in heavy traffic. There is public transport, but we switched to a central hotel where we could walk everywhere and had a much better time. If you’re bringing a dog, there’s a €10 nightly charge and you can’t leave it alone in the room for more than an hour. We gave up the last three nights of our booking rather than stay under these conditions.

The breakfast was awful, and the staff there seemed lost and uninterested in what was going on. The bedrooms smelled bad, and the bathrooms had a foul odor. It’s a real shame for a brand like Novotel. I’d seen older reviews raising the same problems, followed by apologies and promises that things would be fixed soon. Nothing seems to have changed. I hope management doesn’t send me the same stock response. I don’t want to spend my whole flight home laughing about it.

We booked for four, but the room was tiny and uncomfortable. The sofa bed was in such bad shape that it was practically unusable, and the windows were broken and hard to operate. The place also felt poorly cared for: the air vents were dusty and clearly neglected. Breakfast had very few options and was disappointing, while the restaurant staff seemed overwhelmed and uninterested in guests. A frustrating stay.

Breakfast was a highlight, with plenty of choice and fresh tasting food. Our room was comfortable and looked after, and the staff were friendly and professional throughout. We had a really pleasant stay at Novotel Porto Gaia.

We loved dinner and thought the breakfast was delicious, with lots to choose from. The pool was nice and just right for kids, and parking is right in front of the hotel. Our room was very clean, and the staff were friendly and helpful. A wonderful stay.
