The continental breakfast was generous: breads, croissants, cake, yogurt, cereal, fresh fruit, ham and cheese, plus homemade preserves and honey. There’s a games room with table tennis and a pinball machine, and a cosy lounge with sofas, a fireplace, family memorabilia and a pool table. The grounds are sizeable, with terraces for sitting out and a cold pool. Small dogs are welcome. This is a grand traditional manor house from 1718, full of dark antique furniture and bits and pieces on every surface. It feels like stepping back in time, and like being a guest in the owners’ home, with cooking smells, family chatter and photos around. We were asked to care for it respectfully, as if it were our own.

I was at a baptism today, and the service was very poor. The food arrived really cold, while the wine, Coke, orange juice and water were extremely warm. For cold drinks, we had to go to the bar and get the open bottles they’d set out for the tables. When we asked for ice, each person got only two cubes. It was 38 degrees, and the only cooling was from four ceiling fans. I wouldn’t recommend the service.

The hosts are formidable, and the place is lovely and rustic. There’s a game room, a cosy bar and a fitness area, among other things. I’d give it six stars if I could. Whenever family visits, I book here again.

Please don’t go. I recently attended my niece’s baptism there, and the staff hospitality and event organisation were the worst I’ve experienced. The drinks were hot. When we asked for ice or an ice bowl to keep them cool, they refused at first. After several tries they brought some, but only two small cubes for each cup. Just awful.

The owners are awesome, and the setting is beautiful. Viseu is lovely too, a really nice city to visit for a few days.
