It’s a quiet place with comfortable beds and clean linen, about a five-minute walk from the sea. The rooms are clean and have a kettle, air conditioning, a TV and a fridge. The only problem was that the Wi-Fi didn’t work.

I was left disappointed. The room I was given had dirty walls, a stained carpet that hadn’t been vacuumed, a filthy fridge that smelled awful, a blocked shower drain and two broken chairs out of the three on the balcony. I’d booked by phone and paid in advance for a particular triple room at Mirela, where I’d stayed 4.5 years ago. I liked it then because it was spacious, had a large balcony and a bathroom window. During our conversation they confirmed several times that it was available for my dates. But at check-in they offered me a different room at Senator, on the ground floor and without a balcony, saying the Mirela room was only free for fewer nights than I wanted. I refused, cut my holiday short and checked in at Mirela. The maid had supposedly “sanitized” the room.
