The price is hard to argue with. For what I paid, I can live with the problems, though I’d happily pay a little more if they put that money into updating the place. What makes it memorable is the atmosphere. It has real character, and they’ve committed fully to the castle idea, with old weapons on the walls, red carpets, mirrors and candlelight. The Dracula theme may not be original for Romania, but the hotel has a soul of its own. Staff try to make the stay personal, and at night it’s so still you can hear the wind and leaves. The downsides are pretty clear: the cheapest rooms are very small attic rooms on the third floor, with no lift, and there’s no AC, so they could be rough in hot weather. Breakfast felt basic for €10. The building needs some renovation too. My shower leaked, and a few mattresses seemed ready to be replaced.
