Republic Square is a handy place to meet or get your bearings in central Belgrade. The National Museum and National Theatre are right there, and you can easily walk to shops, cafés, pedestrian streets, and other attractions. There’s plenty of city life around it. I’d include the square while exploring, whether you’re seeing the city’s history, going to a performance, or just meeting someone.

Today’s Republic Square is a busy social and cultural center, hosting concerts, festivals, protests, and everyday meetups. Locals often use the statue in the middle as a landmark and say, “meet by the horse.” The square is in Belgrade’s Old Town, where major streets come together. At its center is the 1882 equestrian statue of Prince Mihailo Obrenović, a symbol of Serbia’s independence. The area was once the site of the old Stambol Gate, a key city entrance, and its change into a modern square reflects Belgrade’s shift from an Ottoman-era town to a European capital.

I wouldn’t set aside a long visit just for Republic Square, but it’s an easy, lively stop and a useful meeting place. There were people crossing through, meeting friends, and heading for shops, cafés, and restaurants. The square isn’t necessarily the prettiest I saw in the Balkans, though it’s surrounded by landmarks including the National Museum, National Theatre, and Prince Mihailo monument. I like writing about places I see while traveling, and this is a sensible starting point for a first visit to Belgrade. From here, I enjoyed walking along Knez Mihailova Street toward Kalemegdan Fortress. It’s a straightforward route through the center, and the square helps you get oriented before you reach the busier pedestrian streets.

The square gets quieter in the morning before noon and quite crowded in the evening. The large statue of Prince Mihailo gives it an elegant look, and it leads directly to one of Belgrade’s main promenades. Set in the heart of the city, Republic Square is a grand and prestigious place, and one of Belgrade’s most visited attractions.
