The room was so hot that I only managed a little sleep. I was on the third floor, and with no elevator the stairs were exhausting at 68. There was no air conditioning or fan. I couldn't leave the balcony door open at night because there was no mosquito screen, and the net over the bed looked dirty. Once I opened the door at sunrise, the east-facing room heated up like a sauna within an hour. It also looked onto a busy, noisy road. I had booked six nights through an online agent, arriving around 2 a.m. for the first one. I checked out the next morning and found another hotel. After I explained why to the lobby clerk, the owner called that evening, apologized, and offered to refund the remaining five nights through the agent. That refund still hasn't come, and the agent hasn't been able to reach the owner. I paid by credit card and plan to contact them about getting my money back. A really frustrating stay.

For $30 a night, it's an okay place and downtown, close to almost everything. The reception staff were really nice, and surprisingly quick. The hotel itself feels too old, though, and the bathroom curtains are dirty and need replacing. Service in the restaurant was very slow, like at many places in Rwanda.

Ask for a room looking out over the back of the hotel, if you can. The rooms are clean, comfortable and functional, though not Hyatt quality. Staff here really make an effort, and the food is excellent. Just order about an hour before you want to eat. A very good little hotel in central Kigali.

The location made it easy to explore Kigali, and the staff went out of their way to make the stay comfortable. The rooms were impeccably clean, and the on-site amenities were top-notch. Hotel Okapi in Kigali, Rwanda exceeded my expectations, from the warm welcome to all the thoughtful details. I'd highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city.

The rooms were clean, the food was good, and the service was good too. But pricing for accommodation doesn't feel transparent. It seemed like they tried to charge whatever they thought a customer might be able to pay. Booking through a travel agent may be cheaper than asking the hotel directly. They have different room categories, yet don't offer the cheaper ones unless you specifically ask.
