The owner offered to move us to another house across the street or replace the mattress after we complained. We’d read reviews from others who got those offers, and they said the other house and the supposedly softer mattress were just as bad. We checked out early the next morning, but now the owner won’t refund the difference and says it’s our fault. The breakfast was awful to me, and I think they need a new chef. Maybe that’s just Rwandian standards, but it felt like a money grab. The towels smelled terrible and weren’t clean properly. We got one, with no hand towel or towel for stepping out of the shower. The toilet also didn’t work right. There was no hot water, and I was told Kigari business people get up and go without showering, so they don’t need hot water. The shower had no curtain, so cold water went everywhere. Internet was terrible, and the location wasn’t great, with a view of the slums across the street. A local house bar kept us awake, and when it closed the dogs barked until 4 am. The beds felt like bricks, and the mosquito nets were torn or broken, tied to four metal bars that seemed like an afterthought. This place wasn’t at all as described. If you expect western standards, I’d stay away.

We really enjoyed staying here. The house is in a quiet, pleasant neighbourhood, with a kitchen guests can use, and the city centre is a short bus ride away. It’s good value, friendly, and has a nice look to it. Johnson was very helpful and informative.

The staff also lie to keep your money when you say you’re leaving. I could keep going, but the gist is: don’t stay here. The place was horrendous, and I’d never recommend it, even if you’re on the tightest budget. It was very hot with no AC or fan, and the internet was awful even after they restarted the router. The old furniture had broken drawers. The bed was so hard I tried sleeping in the chair, but it squeaked terribly. The mosquito net was attached to a wire frame that leaned so much it made me dizzy. People across the way were up all night, and dogs barked through the night too. The bathroom was terrible: nowhere to put toiletries, and the shower sprayed water all over, leaving a puddle overnight. There was no hot water, soap, or body wash. The soap dish was broken, with screws sticking out in the shower. No hand towels, and the one bath towel smelled musty. The lights flickered badly when switched on. They didn’t offer bottled water, even though we were told not to brush our teeth with the tap water. The road leading to the place turns to dirt and has terrible potholes, and nothing is within walking distance.

For a simple, affordable stay, I’d definitely recommend it. Breakfast is usually an omelette and fruit, with tea or coffee. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the WiFi is good, and the showers are hot. The staff are always friendly and helpful. Amos, the owner, speaks good English and is approachable and really helpful.

The surroundings were quiet and tidy, and it’s close to the bus station. Staff were welcoming and friendly, and breakfast was prepared well to suit your request. I’ll definitely come back.
